This is a little different from the usual "brick wall", because I'm looking for descendants instead of ancestors. Here's the story:
Since I first started researching my genealogy, I've known that my Pomeranian LUCK ancestors did not arrive in this country until the 1890's, when they settled first in Lawrence, Massachusetts and later in New York City. So, while I was aware there were many LUCK's in Wisconsin and Minnesota, and even corresponded with some of them, I never seriously expected to find a connection.
Late last summer I received a quote from a book about the history of Insel Gristow, the island where the village of Bünnewitz was located, the origin of my LUCK's. The quote was: "A schoolteacher, Joachim Luck, with his wife and five children, was the first of many to emigrate from Bünnewitz to America, leaving in May of 1839". My G-G-Grandfather, Carl Friedrich LUCK, had a brother named Joachim Friedrich LUCK. Assuming this was the same man (there was only one LUCK family in Bünnewitz) I tried to track him down. I would love to find some new cousins out there, even distant ones.
I found a Joachim Frederick LUCK, listed as a resident of Washington County, WI buying land in Waukesha County in 1843. The same man shows up in the 1850 census living in Milwaukee. I also found a listing for a "Freidrich Joachim LUCK" in Myron Gruenwald's Die Vorfahren database, article number 3702 and submitter number 1. A gentleman named John Birkholz has the DPL submitter list and was kind enough to send me article 3702. Here is the entire article, as accurately as I can make it (including spelling mistakes <g>):
3702. PVF-006 Freidrich Joachim LUCK arrived from Buessewitz, Cammin
with wife and 5 children in 1839. Settled in Freistadt, WI.
Joachim Friedrich PIEPKORN (2/10/1796-23/12/1880)
born in Grabau, Cammin. Married to Caroline Charlotte GIERKE (1802-1892)
born in Stettin Children: Freidrich (1828 in Grabau, Cammin-1863)
Married 1st to Elisabeth NIER, born in Canada. Married 2d to Theresa WIILE,
born 1836 in Darsow to Phillip and _____. Children of 2d marriage:
Phillip (BRENDEMUHL, born t Franz and Mildred GROTH).
Carl PIEPKORN (1841-); Wilhelmine (WENDT); Gottlieb
Needless to say, that first line got me tremendously excited. Unfortunately, Mr. Birkholtz says Myron lost the submitter's name and address for this article, and that's why he used his own number 1 for the submitter. Guessing that the "PVF-006" referred to the Pommersche Verein Freistadt I contacted them. They have a family tree for Friedrich Joachim LUCK, but they don't know who submitted it. I've joined that organization and sent for a copy of the family tree, but I already know it doesn't go to the present day or cover anybody living. I've also learned from the PVF that he was part of the "Old Lutheran" movement, and after his arrival in Freistadt served as the town's schoolteacher and lay minister until 1841. In 1847 he shows up as one of the founders of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, WI. I don't know the names of his wife or any of his children. None of them show up in the LDS films of church records from Kreis Cammin, possibly because they were "Old Lutheran's" and not participating in the church, possibly because the wedding and births occurred during the many gaps in the records. I don't really know, but I suspect the former.
Which brings me to where I am now. I'm hoping one of you visitors will be the breakthrough. Are you connected to that family? Do you know who might have submitted that article and how I could contact them? Have you come across LUCK's who were in Freistadt, Waukesha County, or Milwaukee between 1839 and 1850? If it helps, this family has consistently used the same given names generation after generation right up until today. They are: Alexander, Carl, Emil, Friedrich, Hermann, Joachim, Julius, Martin, Michael, Paul, and Wilhelm for men: Alvine, Anna, Dorothea, Elfrieda, Elisabeth, Erika, Louise, Marie, Martha, Meta, Sophia, and Wilhelmine for women.
