In September of 2000 I went to Germany for the first
time to visit my relatives in Potsdam. I also planned to take a trip
with my cousins to Provinz Posen, now in Poland, where my mother's FENSKE
and SCHULZ ancestors once lived. We started by visiting my mother's
cousin, Herwig Fenske in Uelzen, who was born and raised on the Fenske farm
in Kirchplatz Borui. This was the same farm where my grandfather and
great-grandfather Fenske were born, and the place where my mother spent her
summers as a child. Herwig pointed out on my map the locations of
the various family farms and other buildings. He also showed us pictures
and videos from the trips he had taken there in 1993 and 1995.
My cousins Taina and Georgie, Georgie's husband
Markus, and I headed off on a Sunday morning to Nowy Tomyscl, arriving there
at mid-morning. Our next stop was Boruja Koscielne. There was
so much to see there that we were unable to get to Gloden and Wollstein.
That will have to wait for the next trip.
